Rationale
This unit will help students gain the knowledge of the Civil War that they need to understand our American heritage. The Civil War shaped our country into what it is today and that is why this is a common topic that students study in grades 6-8. Learning about the Civil War will help students make educated decisions on important topics that deal with our country based on the rights and values that our citizens fought for. (6.1 U.S. History: America in the World All students will acquire the knowledge and skills to think analytically about how past and present interactions of people, cultures, and the environment shape the American heritage. Such knowledge and skills enable students to make informed decisions that reflect fundamental rights and core democratic values as productive citizens in local, national, and global communities.) The Civil War and Reconstruction have had a lasting impact on the United States and it’s development. Learning about our nation’s past will only benefit the students, in order to know where we came from and why things are the way they are, to make sure history does not repeat itself.
Students will develop skills, such as working with one another, being able to gain perspective from different sides, writing, reading, comparing, and other aspects throughout this unit. Students will also be prepared to study more American History in the future. These skills will be valuable to students as they get into higher grades.
