Learning Experiences
1. Students will explore the different battles of the civil war and determined how they contributed to the outcome of the war.
2. Students will experience being a person from the civil war era and will write an essay about what their life was like and what they were experiencing at the beginning of the war.
3. Students will experience being a newspaper editor from the time period and will have the opportunity to create their own newspaper about the events they think are the most important to the war.
4. Students will be asked to think about what life would be like today if key moments such as the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation never happened.
5. Students will be asked to analyze the 13th amendment and think about what it means for America, and most importantly slaves.
6. Students will explore the issues of slavery and determine the impact it had before, during, and after the war.
7. Students will explore the differences of the North vs. the South. They will experience the hostility by staging a classroom debate where half the class is arguing for the North and the other for the South.
8. Students will explore the live of General Grant and General Lee. They will learn about the generals and determine what qualities caused them to win/lose.
9. Students will explore the Underground Railroad and the Abolitionist movement and how this played a role in the start of the war.
10. Students will learn about the Emancipation Proclamation along with what role President Lincoln played throughout the war.
11. Students will be given the opportunity to walk in President Lincoln's shoes and experience what it was like to make important critical decisions at the time and what they would have done differently or the same.
12. Students will think about the outcome of the war and how reconstruction affected America for years to come.
